Now he’s automating content strategy for every YouTube channel.
This week we caught up with Richard, also known as Richard the YouTube strategist. He told us about how he broke into the scene, his method for getting hired, what he does, and the tool he’s made to cut his workload in half.
Getting started
Before Youtube, Richard’s background was business intelligence and data analysis. He brought the same data-driven mindset to his YouTube work.
Richard began making YouTube videos analyzing how creators grew. He would spend 100+ hours researching in order to create a single analysis video.
After publishing a video, he’d promote them within a creator’s community to get noticed. While the views weren’t astronomical, they managed to catch the attention of the right people.

Providing value to get hired
A trend in Richard’s success was how he went about getting hired. His goal was to gain a creator’s attention and give away free insights until the decision to hire him is easy.
He constantly shared his knowledge on Twitter by openly breaking down his work and replying directly to creators. This approach allowed creators to see his track record of success before connecting.
Richard offered free demos of his services to creators. Even if this approach failed 9 times out of 10, the one success made it worthwhile. This pitch also made it easy to get an initial ‘yes’ from a creator.

The responsibilities of a YouTube strategist
Richard handles 3 main areas of work for his YouTube clients:
Research: Find what’s working on YouTube and why
Ideation: Use the research to come up with story, title, and thumbnail ideas
Optimization: suggest upgrades to improve video click-thru’s and watch time
The secret to running content strategy for 50+ channels
Richard embraced the concept that "everything is a remix." To make videos that perform, you need to know what’s worth replicating. He put all his focus into uncovering outliers.
He wasn’t focussed on studying the videos that got millions of views. Instead, Richard focussed on finding the videos that over-performed relative to a creator’s other content (The 1 of 10’s, if you will). If a creator usually averages 100k views and they post a video that gets 1M views, he would study why this video performed so much better.
Richard built his success around finding outliers, so it’s cool to see him launch a tool that automates this process. Check out his site, 1of10.com if you haven’t already.
